Some quotes of Ibn Jareer at-Tabari on creed

Following are some quotes of the great Mufassir Ibn Jareer at-Tabari (224 – 310 AH) on Aqeeda against the aqid of extreme sufiyah.

1. Imam Ibn Jareer at-Tabari said:
Allah says to his Prophet peace be upon him: O Muhammad (peace be upon him) We have not given the life of eternity to any of the son of Adam before you, so that we give you eternity. You will also die like the Prophets died who came before you. [Tafsir at-Tabari 17/24]

2. Ibn Jareer at-Tabari commented
(Allah says Only those who hear will respond) “But the dead – Allah will resurrect them”.. Allah (declared) kuffar like the dead who do not hear the voice, They do not understand the invocation, neither they can understand the words..[Tafseer Tabree 5/184]

3. at-Tabari Commented
(Wa Iyyaka nasta’een) : From You Our Lord we seek help for our worship and our obediance to you in all our affairs – no one but You. For the ones who disbelieved in you would ask the help of what they worshiped from the idols in their affairs, and we seek your help in all of our affairs, our worship being to you alone. Tafsir of Surah al Faatiha]

4. at-Tabari said
“The saying of Allah Ta’ala ((And to your Lord turn all your invocations)) Allah mentions is: “O Muhammad direct your fervent desires to your Lord, and not to any one from the creation since the mushrikeen from your people have made their fervent desires to gods and their associates”. The people of Tafseer have also said similar to what we have just mentioned”[in his tafsir of Surah ash-Sharh (94), verse 8]

5. Ibn Jareer at-Tabari Commented under Al-Jinn 72:18:
(And the mosques are for Allah so invoke not) O people (anyone along with Allah) and do not associate anyone as a partner to Him therein, but rather single Him out with Tawhid (Pure Monotheism) and make worship purely and sincerely for Him (alone)

6. at-Tabari said under ayah 19 of surah 53

(Have you then considered Al-Lat,)

They say: He was a man who used to mix Sawiq (a kind of barley mash) with water for the pilgrims during the time of Jahiliyyah. When he died, they remained next to his grave and worshiped him.”

7. Imam Ibn Jareer at-Tabari said in the commentary of Surah Yusuf verse 102
Allah says:You were not Present (Haazir) with the brothers of Yusuf Peace be upon him when they arranged their plan together, to throw Yusuf into the well..(end quote)

8. Ibn Jareer atTabari commented
{If I had the knowledge of the Ghayb (Unseen)} If I would know what is going to happen and which is yet to happen {I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth} that I would have prepared a lot of good [Tafsir of al-Araaf verse 188]

9. Ibn Jareer at-Tabari commented
He (Allah) does not show the unseen to anyone so that he may know or see it but to messenger to whom he has chosen. So he shows him whatever he wills.[Tafsir of al-Jinn verse 26]

10. Ibn Jareer at-Tabari commented
The scholars submit the knowledge of the hour to Allah because no one knows when the day of judgment will occur except Him.[Tafseer at-Tabari under41:47]

11. Quran states
And ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before thee.. (43:45)

Ibn kathir says
the meaning is that ask to those people to whom these messengers were sent, abdul rehman said ask to the anbiya, meaning in the night of meraj and Ibn Jareer (at-Tabari) holds the first opinion.

12. Ibn Jareer atTabari said
Allah says, “Say to these polytheists, O Muhammad: I am only human like you, from the sons of Adam, I have no knowledge except what God taught me. [Tafsir of Quran 18:110]

13. Ibn Jareer atTabar1 in his commentary writes:
Meaning of Nur is Muhammad Peace be upon him, Because of him Allah Illuminated the truth, Prevailed Islam, terminated the shirk, He (peace be upon him) is light for the one who wants to take light from him [Jame al Bayan fe Tafseer al Quran under 5/15]
