Where is Allah? Separate or Part of Creation? Above Heaven & Arsh?

Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamah believe in and confirm all of the attributes of Allaah without distorting their meaning, and that Allaah is above His seven heavens, above His ‘Arsh, and separated from His creatures, and His creatures are separated from Him.

The essential divine attributes of Allaah constitute an integral part of His essence and are not superadded to it. They are accepted literally by Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’h without questioning the ‘how’ of these attributes. To deny them is clear unbelief and heresy. It is for this reason this discourse has been prepared to deal with the creed of Loftiness of Allaah, or the question, ‘Where is Allaah?’ with the Scriptural evidences from the Quran, authentic hadiths, proofs from sahabas and taba-eins. Before quoting the evidences let me quote an Answer of Abu Jafar al Hamdani to Imam al Haramayn on Allah’s Uluw

Muhammad bin Tahir al Maqdasi mentioned that Shaykh Abu Jafar al Hamdani came into the Majlis of Imam al Haramayn where he was saying there is no Sift of Uluw, He said: Allah was there but Arsh was not there, Allah is still there where he was. Shaykh Abu Jafar said: O My teacher inform us regarding a doubt in our hearts that whenever an Arif says “YA ALLAH” the focus of his heart is on uluw, not left or right. The Imam slapped on his head and came down and I think he also said: he was weaping and said Hamdani made me answerless.

Tafsir of above verses with Meaning of Istawa (Tafsir Ibn Kathir).

As for Allah’s statement,
[ثُمَّ اسْتَوَى عَلَى الْعَرْشِ] (and then He rose over (Istawa) the Throne) the people had several conflicting opinions over its meaning. However, we follow the way that our righteous predecessors took in this regard, such as Malik, Al-Awza`i, Ath-Thawri, Al-Layth bin Sa`d, Ash Shafi`i, Ahmad, Ishaq bin Rahwayh and the rest of the scholars of Islam, in past and present times.Surely, we accept the apparent meaning of, Al-Istawa, without discussing its true essence, equating it (with the attributes of the creation), or altering or denying it (in any way or form). We also believe that the meaning that comes to those who equate Allah with the creation is to be rejected, for nothing is similar to Allah.

Indeed, we assert and affirm what the Imams said, such as Nu`aym bin Hammad Al-Khuza’i, the teacher of Imam Al-Bukhari, who said, “Whoever likens Allah with His creation, will have committed Kufr. Whoever denies what Allah has described Himself with, will have committed Kufr. Certainly, there is no resemblance (of Allah with the creation) in what Allah and His Messenger have described Him with. Whoever attests to Allah’s attributes that the plain Ayat and authentic Hadiths have mentioned, in the manner that suits Allah’s majesty, all the while rejecting all shortcomings from Him, will have taken the path of guidance.”

Allah says,
”Do you feel secure that He(Allah), Who is fis-sama (in the heavens), will not cause the earth to sin Or do you feel secure that He, Who is fis-sama (in the heavens) will not send against you a violent whirlwind?” [Surah Mulk 67:16-17] Comment:-Does it mean Allah is inside the Heaven? The Answer is No.! Allah is above the Heavens, for better understanding of the above verse let’s analyze some more verses.

Allah says,
‘’And when it is said unto them: Make not mischief in the earth, they say: We are peacemakers only.’’(Surah Baqrah Ayat-11)

”Those who break the covenant of Allah after ratifying it, and sever that which Allah ordered to be joined, and (who) make mischief in the earth: Those are they who are the losers.”(Surah Baqrah Ayat-27)

[Pharaoh] said, “You believed him before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you ‘fi’ (on) the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring.”[Al-Quran 20:71] Comment:-The very Same Word “فِى” has been used in all the above verses does it mean we should not make mischief inside the Earth?? the answer is no it refers to surface of Earth Now, the ‘fi’ in the Last verse refers not to ‘in’ but to ‘on’ as one cannot be crucified within a trunk!.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The night Allah’s Apostle was taken for a journey from the sacred mosque (of Mecca) Al-Ka`ba: Three persons came to him (in a dreamy while he was sleeping in the Sacred Mosque before the Divine Inspiration was revealed to Him. One of them said, “Which of them is he?” The middle (second) angel said, “He is the best of them.” The last (third) angle said, “Take the best of them.” Only that much happened on that night and he did not see them till they came on another night, i.e. after The Divine Inspiration was revealed to him. (Fath-ul-Bari Page 258, Vol. 17) and he saw them, his eyes were asleep but his heart was not—-and so is the case with the prophets: their eyes sleep while their hearts do not sleep. So those angels did not talk to him till they carried him and placed him beside the well of Zamzam. From among them Gabriel took charge of him. Gabriel cut open (the part of his body) between his throat and the middle of his chest (heart) and took all the material out of his chest and `Abdomen and then washed it with Zamzam water with his own hands till he cleansed the inside of his body, and then a gold tray containing a gold bowl full of belief and wisdom was brought and then Gabriel stuffed his chest and throat blood vessels with it and then closed it (the chest). He then ascended with him to the heaven of the world and knocked on one of its doors. The dwellers of the Heaven asked, ‘Who is it?’ He said, “Gabriel.” They said, “Who is accompanying you?” He said, “Muhammad.” They said, “Has he been called?” He said, “Yes” They said, “He is welcomed.” So the dwellers of the Heaven became pleased with his arrival, and they did not know what Allah would do to the Prophet on earth unless Allah informed them. The Prophet met Adam over the nearest Heaven. Gabriel said to the Prophet, “He is your father; greet him.” The Prophet greeted him and Adam returned his greeting and said, “Welcome, O my Son! O what a good son you are!” Behold, he saw two flowing rivers, while he was in the nearest sky. He asked, “What are these two rivers, O Gabriel?” Gabriel said, “These are the sources of the Nile and the Euphrates.” Then Gabriel took him around that Heaven and behold, he saw another river at the bank of which there was a palace built of pearls and emerald. He put his hand into the river and found its mud like musk Adhfar. He asked, “What is this, O Gabriel?” Gabriel said, “This is the Kauthar which your Lord has kept for you.” Then Gabriel ascended (with him) to the second Heaven and the angels asked the same questions as those on the first Heaven, i.e., “Who is it?” Gabriel replied, “Gabriel”. They asked, “Who is accompanying you?” He said, “Muhammad.” They asked, “Has he been sent for?” He said, “Yes.” Then they said, “He is welcomed.” Then he (Gabriel) ascended with the Prophet to the third Heaven, and the angels said the same as the angels of the first and the second Heavens had said. Then he ascended with him to the fourth Heaven and they said the same; and then he ascended with him to the fifth Heaven and they said the same; and then he ascended with him to the sixth Heaven and they said the same; then he ascended with him to the seventh Heaven and they said the same. On each Heaven there were prophets whose names he had mentioned and of whom I remember Idris on the second Heaven, Aaron on the fourth Heavens another prophet whose name I don’t remember, on the fifth Heaven, Abraham on the sixth Heaven, and Moses on the seventh Heaven because of his privilege of talking to Allah directly. Moses said (to Allah), “O Lord! I thought that none would be raised up above me.” But Gabriel ascended with him (the Prophet) for a distance above that, the distance of which only Allah knows, till he reached the Lote Tree (beyond which none may pass) and then the Irresistible, the Lord of Honor and Majesty approached and came closer till he (Gabriel) was about two bow lengths or (even) nearer. (It is said that it was Gabriel who approached and came closer to the Prophet. (Fate Al-Bari Page 263, 264, Vol. 17). Among the things which Allah revealed to him then, was: “Fifty prayers were enjoined on his followers in a day and a night.” Then the Prophet descended till he met Moses, and then Moses stopped him and asked, “O Muhammad ! What did your Lord en join upon you?” The Prophet replied,” He enjoined upon me to perform fifty prayers in a day and a night.” Moses said, “Your followers cannot do that; Go back so that your Lord may reduce it for you and for them.” So the Prophet turned to Gabriel as if he wanted to consult him about that issue. Gabriel told him of his opinion, saying, “Yes, if you wish.” So Gabriel ascended with him to the Irresistible and said while he was in his place, “O Lord, please lighten our burden as my followers cannot do that.” So Allah deducted for him ten prayers where upon he returned to Moses who stopped him again and kept on sending him back to his Lord till the enjoined prayers were reduced to only five prayers. Then Moses stopped him when the prayers had been reduced to five and said, “O Muhammad! By Allah, I tried to persuade my nation, Bani Israel to do less than this, but they could not do it and gave it up. However, your followers are weaker in body, heart, sight and hearing, so return to your Lord so that He may lighten your burden.” The Prophet turned towards Gabriel for advice and Gabriel did not disapprove of that. So he ascended with him for the fifth time. The Prophet said, “O Lord, my followers are weak in their bodies, hearts, hearing and constitution, so lighten our burden.” On that the Irresistible said, “O Muhammad!” the Prophet replied, “Labbaik and Sa`daik.” Allah said, “The Word that comes from Me does not change, so it will be as I enjoined on you in the Mother of the Book.” Allah added, “Every good deed will be rewarded as ten times so it is fifty (prayers) in the Mother of the Book (in reward) but you are to perform only five (in practice).” The Prophet returned to Moses who asked, “What have you done?” He said, “He has lightened our burden: He has given us for every good deed a tenfold reward.” Moses said, “By Allah! I tried to make Bani Israel observe less than that, but they gave it up. So go back to your Lord that He may lighten your burden further.” Allah’s Apostle said, “O Moses! By Allah, I feel shy of returning too many times to my Lord.” On that Gabriel said, “Descend in Allah’s Name.” The Prophet then woke while he was in the Sacred Mosque (at Mecca).
Worth pondering: This authentic Hadeeths speaks clearly in plain words and a straightforward manner which is not liable to misconstruction or farfetched interpretations. The Prophet (pbuh) was taken up to Allah from one heaven above the other . The Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah believe that the Mi’raj was not an illusion, rather real and essential. Here is the proof Bukhari Volume 05, Book 058, Hadith Number 228.Narated By Ibn ‘Abbas : Regarding the Statement of Allah:”And We granted the vision (Ascension to the heavens) which We made you see (as an actual eye witness) was only made as a trial for the people.” (17.60)Ibn Abbas added: The sights which Allah’s Apostle was shown on the Night Journey when he was taken to Bait-ul Maqdis (i.e. Jerusalem) were actual sights, (not dreams). Had Allaah (swt) been everywhere, why would the Prophet (pbuh) be taken all the way up to the seventh heaven? Allaah would have prescribed to him the Salaah on earth rather than in the seventh heaven!!

Ja’far b Muhammad reported on the authority of his father:
They (the audience) said: We will bear witness that you have conveyed (the message), discharged (the ministry of Prophethood) and given wise (sincere) counsel. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) then raised his forefinger towards the sky and pointing it at the people (said):” O Allah, be witness. 0 Allah, be witness,” saying it thrice.(Sahih Muslim English reference: Book 7, Hadith 2803; Sahih Muslim Arabic reference: Book 16, Hadith 3009)
Comment:-Had Allaah (swt) been everywhere, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would not have particularly raised his finger towards the sky.And we Shorten the Hadeeth for the convinence of the readers.

Mu’awiya b. al-Hakam said:
I had a maid-servant who tended goats by the side of Uhud and Jawwaniya. One day I happened to pass that way and found that a wolf had carried a goat from her flock. I am after all a man from the posterity of Adam. I felt sorry as they (human beings) feel sorry. So I slapped her. I came to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and felt (this act of mine) as something grievous I said: Messenger of Allah, should I not grant her freedom? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Bring her to me. So I brought her to him. He said to her: Where is Allah? She said: He is in the heaven. He said: Who am I? She said: Thou art the Messenger of Allah. He said: Grant her freedom, she is a believing woman.

It was narrated that Mu’awiyah bin Al-Hakam As-Sulami said:
“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah (), we were recently in a state of ignorance, then Allah (SWT) brought Islam. Some men among us follow omens.’ He said: ‘That is something that they find in their own hearts; it should not deter them from going ahead.’ I said: ‘And some men among us go to fortune tellers.’ He said: ‘Do not go to them.’ He said: ‘Some men among us draw lines.’ He said: ‘One of the Prophets used to draw lines. So whoever is in accord with his drawing of lines, then so it is.'” He said: “While I was praying with the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), a man sneezed and I said: ‘Yarhamuk-Allah (May Allah have mercy on you).’ The people glared at me and I said: ‘May my mother be bereft of me, why are you looking at me?’ The people struck their hands against their thighs, and when I saw that they were telling me to be quiet, I fell silent. When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) finished, he called me. May my father and mother be ransomed for him, he neither did hit me nor rebuke me nor revile me. I have never seen a better teacher than him, before or after. He said: ‘This prayer of ours is not the place for ordinary human speech, rather it is glorification and magnification of Allah (SWT), and reciting Qur’an.’ Then I went out to a flock of sheep of mine that was tended by a slave woman of mine beside Uhud and Al-Jawwaniyyah, and I found that the wolf had taken one of the sheep. I am a man from the sons of Adam and I get upset as they get upset. So I slapped her. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) and told him what happened. He regarded that as a serious action on my part. I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah (pbuh), should I set her free?’ He said: ‘Call her.’ The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to her: ‘Where is Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime?’ She said: ‘In the heavens.’ He said: ‘And who am I?’ She said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (pbuh).’ He said: ‘She is a believer, set her free.'”

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:“Angels come to the dying person, and if the man was righteous, they say: ‘Come out, O good soul that was in a good body, come out praiseworthy and receive glad tidings of mercy and fragrance and a Lord Who is not angry.’ And this is repeated until it comes out, then it is taken up to heaven, and it is opened for it, and it is asked: ‘Who is this?’ They say: ‘So-and-so.’ It is said: ‘Welcome to the good soul that was in a good body. Enter praiseworthy and receive the glad tidings of mercy and fragrance and a Lord Who is not angry.’ And this is repeated until it is brought to the heaven above which is Allah. But if the man was evil, they say: ‘Come out O evil soul that was in an evil body. Come out blameworthy, and receive the tidings of boiling water and the discharge of dirty wounds,’ and other torments of similar kind, all together. And this is repeated until it comes out, then it is taken up to heaven and it is not opened for it. And it is asked: ‘Who is this?’ It is said: ‘So-and-so.’ And it is said: ‘No welcome to the evil soul that was in an evil body. Go back blameworthy, for the gates of heaven will not be opened to you.’ So it is sent back down from heaven, then it goes to the grave.”

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) one day said:
Do you know where the sun goes? They replied: Allah and His Apostle know best. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Verily it (the sun) glides till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it falls prostrate and remains there until it is asked: Rise up and go to the place whence you came, and it goes back and continues emerging out from its rising place and then glides till it reaches its place of rest under the Throne and falls prostrate and remains in that state until it is asked: Rise up and return to the place whence you came, and it returns and emerges out from it rising place and the it glides (in such a normal way) that the people do not discern anything ( unusual in it) till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it would be said to it: Rise up and emerge out from the place of your setting, and it will rise from the place of its setting. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said. Do you know when it would happen? It would happen at the time when faith will not benefit one who has not previously believed or has derived no good from the faith.

It has been narrated on the authority of Masruq Who said:
We asked ‘Abdullah about the Qur’anic verse:” Think not of those who are slain in Allah’s way as dead. Nay, they are alive, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord..” (iii. 169). He said: We asked the meaning of the verse (from the Holy Prophet) who said: The souls, of the martyrs live in the bodies of green birds who have their nests in chandeliers hung from the throne of the Almighty. They eat the fruits of Paradise from wherever they like and then nestle in these chandeliers. Once their Lord cast a glance at them and said: Do ye want anything? They said: What more shall we desire? We eat the fruit of Paradise from wherever we like. Their Lord asked them the same question thrice. When they saw that they will continue to be asked and not left (without answering the question). they said: O Lord, we wish that Thou mayest return our souls to our bodies so that we may be slain in Thy way once again. When He (Allah) saw that they had no need, they were left (to their joy in heaven).

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:
`Ali bin Abi Talib sent a piece of gold not yet taken out of its ore, in a tanned leather container to Allah’s Apostle . Allah’s Apostle distributed that amongst four Persons: ‘Uyaina bin Badr, Aqra bin H`Abis, Zaid Al-Khail and the fourth was either Alqama or Amir bin at-Tufail. On that, one of his companions said, “We are more deserving of this (gold) than these (persons).” When that news reached the Prophet , he said, “Don’t you trust me though I am the truth worthy man of the One in the Heavens, and I receive the news of Heaven (i.e. Divine Inspiration) both in the morning and in the evening?” There got up a man with sunken eyes, raised cheek bones, raised forehead, a thick beard, a shaven head and a waist sheet that was tucked up and he said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Be afraid of Allah.” The Prophet said, “Woe to you! Am I not of all the people of the earth the most entitled to fear Allah?” Then that man went away. Khalid bin Al-Wahd said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Shall I chop his neck off?” The Prophet said, “No, for he may offer prayers.” Khalid said, “Numerous are those who offer prayers and say by their tongues (i.e. mouths) what is not in their hearts.” Allah’s Apostle said, “I have not been ordered (by Allah) to search the hearts of the people or cut open their bellies.” Then the Prophet looked at him (i.e. that man) while the latter was going away and said, “From the offspring of this (man there will come out (people) who will recite the Qur’an continuously and elegantly but it will not exceed their throats. (They will neither understand it nor act upon it). They would go out of the religion (i.e. Islam) as an arrow goes through a game’s body.” I think he also said, “If I should be present at their time I would kill them as the nations a Thamud were killed.”

She then said. “I am afraid that he will praise me too much.” And then it was said to her, “He is the cousin of Allah’s Apostle and one of the prominent Muslims.” Then she said, “Allow him to enter.” (When he entered) he said, “How are you?” She replied, “I am Alright if I fear (Allah).” Ibn `Abbas said, “Allah willing, you are Alright as you are the wife of Allah’s Apostle and he did not marry any virgin except you and proof of your innocence was revealed from the Heaven.” Later on Ibn Az-Zubair entered after him and `Aisha said to him, “Ibn `Abbas came to me and praised me greatly, but I wish that I was a thing forgotten and out of sight.”

Zaid bin Haritha came to the Prophet complaining about his wife. The Prophet kept on saying (to him), “Be afraid of Allah and keep your wife.” Aisha said, “If Allah’s Apostle were to conceal anything (of the Qur’an he would have concealed this Verse.” Zainab used to boast before the wives of the Prophet and used to say, “You were given in marriage by your families, while I was married (to the Prophet) by Allah from over seven Heavens.” And Thabit recited, “The Verse:– ‘But (O Muhammad) you did hide in your heart that which Allah was about to make manifest, you did fear the people,’ (33.37) was revealed in connection with Zainab and Zaid bin Haritha.”

‘Abdullah. Ibn ‘Abbas reported:
A person from the Ansar who was amongst the Companions of Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) reported to me: As we were sitting during the night with Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him), a meteor shot gave a dazzling light. Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: What did you say in the pre-Islamic days when there was such a shot (of meteor)? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best (the actual position), but we, however, used to say that that very night a great man had been born and a great man had died, whereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: (These meteors) are shot neither at the death of anyone nor on the birth of anyone. Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, issues Command when He decides to do a thing. Then (the Angels) supporting the Throne sing His glory, then sing the dwellers of heaven who are near to them until this glory of God reaches them who are in the heaven of this world. Then those who are near the supporters of the Throne ask these supporters of the Throne: What your Lord has said? And they accordingly inform them what He says. Then the dwellers of heaven seek information from them until this information reaches the heaven of the world. In this process of transmission (the jinn snatches) what he manages to overhear and he carries it to his friends. And when the Angels see the jinn they attack them with meteors. If they narrate only which they manage to snatch that is correct but they alloy it with lies and make additions to it.

Sa’d b. Hisham b. ‘Amir decided to participate in the expedition for the sake of Allah, so he came to Medina and he decided to dispose of his property there and buy arms and horses instead and fight against the Romans to the end of his life. When he came to Medina, he met the people of Medina. They dissuaded him to do such a thing, and informed him that a group of six men had decided to do so during the lifetime of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) and the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade them to do it, and said:Is there not for you a model pattern in me? And when they narrated this to him (Sa’d b. Hisham), he returned to his wife, though he had divorced her and made (people) witness to his reconciliation. He then came to Ibn ‘Abbas and asked him about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). Ibn ‘Abbas said: Should I not lead you to one who knows best amongst the people of the world about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)? He said: Who is it? He (Ibn ‘Abbas) said: It is ‘A’isha. So go to her and ask her (about Witr) and then come to me and inform me about her answer that she would give you. So I came to Hakim b. Aflah and requested him to take me to her. He said: I would not go to her, for I forbade her to speak anything (about the conflict) between the two groupS, but she refused (to accept my advice) and went (to participate in that corflict). I (requested) him (Hakim) with an oath to lead me to her. So we went to ‘A’isha and we begged permission to meet her. She granted us permission and we went in. She said: Are you Hakim? (She recognised him.) He replied: Yes. She said: Who is there with you? He said: He is Sa’d b. Hisham. She said: Which Hisham? He said: He is Hisham b. ‘Amir. She blessed him (‘Amir) with mercy from Allah and spoke good of him (Qatada said that he died as a martyr in Uhud). I said: Mother of the Faithful, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). She said: Don’t you read the Qur’an? I said: Yes. Upon this she said: The character of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) was the Qur’an. He said: I felt inclined to get up and not ask anything (further) till death. But then I changed my mind and said: Inform me about the observance (of the night prayer) of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). She said: Did you not recite:” O thou wrapped up”? He said: Yes. She said: Allah, the Exalted and the Glorious, made the observance of the night prayer at the beginning of this Surah obligatory. So the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him and his Companions around him observed this (night prayer) for one year. Allah held back the concluding portion of this Surah for twelve months in the Heaven till (at the end of this period) Allah revealed the concluding verses of this Surah which lightened (the burden of this prayer), and the night prayer became a supererogatory prayer after being an obligatory one. I said: Mother of the Faithful, inform me about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him). She said: I used to prepare tooth stick for him and water for his ablution, and Allah would rouse him to the extent He wished during the night. He would use the tooth stick, and perform ablution, and would offer nine rak’ahs, and would not sit but in the eighth one and would remember Allah, and praise Him and supplicate Him, then he would get up without uttering the salutation and pray the ninth rak’ah. He would then sit, remember, praise Him and supplicate Him and then utter a salutation loud enough for us to hear. He would then pray two rak’ahs sitting after uttering the salutation, and that made eleven rak’ahs. O my son, but when the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) grew old and put on flesh, he observed Witr of seven, doing in the two rak’ahs as he had done formerly, and that made nine. O my son, and when the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed prayer, he liked to keep on observing it, and when sleep or pain overpowered him and made it impossible (for him) to observe prayer in the night, he prayed twelve rak’ahs daring the day. I am not aware of Allah’s Prophet (may peace be upon him) having recited the whole Qur’an during one single night, or praying through the night till morning, or fasting a complete month, except Ramadan. He (the narrator) said: I then went to Ibn ‘Abbas and narrated to him the hadith (transmitted from her), and he said: She says the truth If I went to her and got into her presence, I would have listened to it orally from her. He said: If I were to know that you do not go to her. I would not have transmitted this hadith to you narrated by her.

Jabir b. ‘Abdullah (Allah be pleased with them) reported:
We entered with the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) in the state of Ihram for Hajj. When we came to Mecca he commanded us to put off Ihrim and make it for ‘Umra. We felt It (the command) hard for us, and our hearts were anguished on account of this and it (this reaction of the people) reached the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him). We do not know whether he received (this news) from the Heaven (through revelation) or from the people. (Whatever the case might be) he said; O people, put off Ihram. If there were not the sacrificial animals with me, I would have done as you do. So we put off the Ihram (after performing Umra), and we bad intercourse with our wives and did everything which a non-Muhrim does (applying perfume, putting on clothes, etc.), and when It was the day of Tarwiya (8th of Dhu’l-Hijja) we turned our back to Mecca (in order to go to Mini, ‘Arafat) and we put on lhram for Hajj.

Narrated Al-Bara’:
When Allah’s Apostle arrived at Medina, he prayed facing Jerusalem for sixteen or seventeen months but he wished that he would be ordered to face the Ka`ba. So Allah revealed: — ‘Verily! We have seen the turning of your face towards the heaven; surely we shall turn you to a prayer direction (Qibla) that shall please you.’ (2.144) Thus he was directed towards the Ka`ba. A man prayed the `Asr prayer with the Prophet and then went out, and passing by some people from the Ansar, he said, “I testify. that I have prayed with the Prophet and he (the Prophet) has prayed facing the Ka`ba.” Thereupon they, who were bowing in the `Asr prayer, turned towards the Ka`ba.

Narrated Abu Huraira:The Prophet said, “When Allah has ordained some affair in the Heaven, the angels beat with their wings in obedience to His statement, which sounds like a chain dragged over a rock.” (`Ali and other sub-narrators said, “The sound reaches them.”) “Until when fear is banished from their (angels) hearts, they (angels) say, ‘What was it that your Lord said? They say, ‘The truth; And He is the Most High, the Most Great.’ (34.23) Then those who gain a hearing by stealing (i.e. devils) will hear Allah’s Statement:– ‘Those who gain a hearing by stealing, (stand one over the other like this). (Sufyan, to illustrate this, spread the fingers of his right hand and placed them one over the other horizontally.) A flame may overtake and burn the eavesdropper before conveying the news to the one below him; or it may not overtake him till he has conveyed it to the one below him, who in his turn, conveys it to the one below him, and so on till they convey the news to the earth. (Or probably Sufyan said, “Till the news reaches the earth.”) Then the news is inspired to a sorcerer who would add a hundred lies to it. His prophecy will prove true (as far as the heavenly news is concerned). The people will say. ‘Didn’t he tell us that on such-and-such a day, such-and-such a thing will happen? We have found that is true because of the true news heard from heaven.”

Those who have passed the night with you (or stayed with you) ascend (to the Heaven) and Allah asks them, though He knows everything about you, well, “In what state did you leave my slaves?” The angels reply: “When we left them they were praying and when we reached them, they were praying.”

Narrated Abu Huraira:The Prophet said, “Angels keep on descending from and ascending to the Heaven in turn, some at night and some by daytime, and all of them assemble together at the time of the Fajr and `Asr prayers. Then those who have stayed with you over-night, ascent unto Allah Who asks them, and He knows the answer better than they, “How have you left My slaves?” They reply, “We have left them praying as we found them praying.” If anyone of you says “Amin” (during the Prayer at the end of the recitation of Surat-al-Faitiha), and the angels in Heaven say the same, and the two sayings coincide, all his past sins will be forgiven.”

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying Allah has mobile (squads) of angels, who have no other work (to attend to but) to follow the assemblies of Dhikr and when they find such assemblies in which there is Dhikr (of Allah) they sit in them and some of them surround the others with their wings till the space between them and the sky of the world is fully covered, and when they disperse (after the assembly of Dhikr is adjourned) they go upward to the heaven and Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, asks them although He is best informed about them:Where have you come from? They say: We come from Thine servants upon the earth who had been glorifying Thee (reciting Subhan Allah), uttering Thine Greatness (saying Allah o-Akbar) and uttering Thine Oneness (La ilaha ill Allah) and praising Thee (uttering al-Hamdu Lillah) and begging of Thee. Be would say: What do they beg of Me? They would say: They beg of Thee the Paradise of Thine. He (God) would say: Have they seen My Paradise? They said: No, our Lord. He would say: (What it would be then) if they were to see Mine Paradise? They (the angels) said: They seek Thine protection. He (the Lord) would say: Against what do they seek protection of Mine? They (the angels) would say: Our Lord, from the Hell-Fire. He (the Lord) would say: Have they seen My Fire? They would say: No. He (the Lord) would say: What it would be if they were to see My Fire? They would say: They beg of Thee forgiveness. He would say: I grant pardon to them, and confer upon them what they ask for and grant them protection against which they seek protection. They (the angels) would again say: Our Lord, there is one amongst them such and such simple servant who happened to pass by (that assembly) and sat there along with them (who had been participating in that assembly). He (the Lord) would say: I also grant him pardon, for they are a people the seat-fellows of whom are in no way unfortunate.

Ibn ‘Abbas reported that when Abu Dharr heard of the advent of the Apostle (may peace be upon him) in Mecca he said:
Brother, ride in this valley and bring information for me about the person who claims that there comes to him information from the Heavens. Listen to his words and then come to me. So he rode on until he came to Mecca and he heard his words (the sacred words of the Holy Prophet) and then came back to Abu Dharr and said: I have seen him exhorting (people) to develop good morals and his expressions can in no way be termed as poetry. He (Abu Dharr) said: I have not been satisfied with it regarding that which I had in my mind (as I sent you). So he took up provisions for the journey and a small water-skin con- taining water (and set forth) until he came to Mecca. He came to the mosque (Ka’ba) and began to find out Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) and he did not re- cognise him (the Holy Prophet) and he did not even like that he should ask about him from anyone until it was night, and he slept. ‘All saw him and found him to be a stranger. So he went with him. He followed hive but one did not make any inquiry from the other about anything until it was morning. He then brought the water and his provisions to the mosque and spent a day there, but he did not see Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) until it was night. He then returned to his bed that there happened to pass ‘Ali and he said: This man has not been able to find his destination until this time. He made him stand and he went with him and no one made an in- quiry from his companion about anything. And when it was the third day he did the same. ‘Ali made him stand up and brought him along with him. He said: By Him, besides Whom there is no god, why don’t you tell me (the reason) which brought you here to this town? He said: (I shall do this) provided you hold me promise and a covenant that you would guide me aright. He then did that. He (‘Ali) said: Verily, he Is truthful and he is a Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and when it is morning, follow me and if I would say anything from which I would sense fear about you I would stand (in a manner) as if I was throwing water and if I move on, you then follow me until I get in (some house). He did that and I followed him until he came to Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him). He entered (the house) of Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) along with him and listened to his words and embraced Islam at his very place. Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) said to him: Go to your people and inform them until my command reaches you. Thereupon he said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, I shall say to the people of Mecca this thing at the top of my voice So he set forth until he came to the mosque and then spoke at the top of his voice (saying): I bear testimony to the fact that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. The people attacked him and made him fall down when ‘Abbas came and he leaned over him and said: Woe be upon you, don’t you know that he is from amongst the tribe of Ghifar and your trad- ing route to Syria passes through (the settlements of this tribe), and he rescued him. He (Abu Dharr) did the same on the next day and they (the Meccans) again attacked him and Abbas leaned upon him and he rescued him.

First Narration

Translation- She said: you are the person, who teaches people about masail, people have left your religion, where is your god whom you worship? He remained silent on her, then he stayed seven days without replying to her, then he went out to us and produced in writing that Allah is in the heaven not on earth, so a man said to him: haven’t you seen the words of Allah Ta’ala {and he is near you}. He (Abu hanifa) said: ”This is like you are writing a letter to someone and saying ‘i am with you’ while in reality you are not with him.”

Shaykh al Albani said:

قلت: ظاهر ما نقله المؤلف -عفا الله عنا وعنه- عن البيهقي أن هذا سكت عن إسناد هذه القصة! وليس كذلك، فقد أشار إلى ضعفها بقوله في آخر كلامه المذكور:
“إن صحت الحكاية عنه”.
قلت: وأنى لها الصحة، وراويها نوح الجامع المتهم بالوضع، حتى قال بعضهم: جمع كل شيء إلا الصدق.
Apparently the author (ad-Dahabi) narrated from al Bayhaqi, it appears that he (al Bayhaqi) remained silent on the Isnaad of this narration. But this is not the case, rather he pointed out towards its weakness by saying “If this narration is proven from him”. I (al Albani) say: Nuh al Jam`e was accused of fabricating.. [Mukhtasar al Uluw 1/135]

Imam al Bayhaqi said regarding this narration:
و مراده من ذلك و اللّه أعلم إن صحت الحكاية عنه ما ذكرنا في معنى قوله‌ أَ أَمِنْتُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّماءِ

The meaning of this, Allah knows best, If the narration is authentic from him, as we have mentioned in the meaning of the saying “Or do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven” [Asma wal-siffaat al Bayhaqi 2/383]

Imam ad-Dahabi relied on the saying of al Bayhaqi, He quoted him right after mentioned this narration, that al Bayhaqi said:
لقد أصاب أبو حنيفة رحمه الله فيما نفى عن الله تعالى من الكون في الأرض ، وأصاب فيما ذكر من تأويل الآية ، وتبع مطلق السمع بأن الله تعالى في السماء .
Abu Hanifa rahimullah rightly said, He negated the taweel of this verse and that Allah is in the earth.. [al Uluw al Ghaffar ad-Dahabi, ghayat al eemani 1/574]

In short, The chain of this narration is not saheeh, still ad-Dahabi and al Bayhaqi showed leniency, as al Bayhaqi did Istedlaal from this narration and ad-Dahabi endorsed his verdicts. According to shaykh al Albani this narration is not proven from Imam Abu Hanifa.

Second Narration

Translation- Abu Muti al Balkhi, who is author of Fiqh al Akbar that He said: I asked Imam Abu Hanifa about a person who says, ‘I do not know whether my lord is, above the heavens or on earth?’ he (Abu Hanifa) said: ‘A person who makes such a statement becomes an apostate because Allah Ta’ala says, {The Merciful has ascended above the throne}, and the throne of Allah is above seven heavens’. I further asked, ‘What if such a person admits, Allah is above His throne, but does not know whether the throne is in the heavens or on earth’. He (Abu Hanifa) said: ‘If he denies that it is in the heavens, he is an apostate’.

Note: Abu Muti al Balkhiis among the greatest of the Imams of Ahnaf

It is mentioned in Tabqaat al Hanafiya or Tabqaat al Sunniya fe Tarajim al Hanafiya 1/263 no. 788 by Taqi ad-din al Ghazi (d 1010 h).
Al Hakam bin Abdullah bin Musallama bin Abdil Rahman Abu Mut`i al Balkhi, The Imam, The practicing Scholar, One of the prominent scholar of this ummah whose virtues are accepted by the leading scholars of this ummah.
He narrated from Hisham bin Hassan, Maalik bin Anas, Sufiyan at-Thawri, Abi Hanifa and He (abu Muti) was among his (Abu Hanifa`s) greatest of the companions, He is a narrator of Fiqh al Akbar.
Ahmad bin Mun`i and a group among the people of Khurasaan narrated from him. He was Judge of “Balkh” and visited Baghdad many times, gave lectures, met Abu Yusaf and debated him. He remained the judge of “Balakh” for sixteen years, he used to speak truth and also practice upon the haq. (end quote)

Then he also mentioned praises of Abdullah bin Mubarak and Maalik bin Anas for Abu Muti al Balkhi which are proven or not, Allah knows, but the point is Abu Muti al Balkhi is one of the great Imams of Ahnaaf.

The status of Abu Muti al Balkhi in the eyes of Muhadditheen is as follows.

Shaykh al Albani said:

I say: Abu Muti was among the great companions of Abu Hanifa and their fuqaha, The authir (ad-Dahabi) said in al Mizan (regarding Abu Muti):
“He was good in opinion, The Allama with great excellence, but he was very weak in memorizing the athar, Ibn al Mubarak praised his religion and knowledge. And Ibn Maeen said: He is nothing…”
I say: the saying of the author (ad-Dahabi) that he (Abu Muti) is the author of Fiqh al Akbar, is an indication that its not the book authored by Imam Abu Hanifa rahimahullah as it is famous among the hanafiyah. [Mukhtasar al Uluw 1/136]

In short, Abu Muti was weak in memory, but good in religion. If Ahnaf do not accept this narration because of Abu Muti al Balkhi, than they should also accept, “Fiqh al Akbar” is not authored by Imam Abu Hanifa as he is one of the narrators of the book.

Translation- ِAbu Hanifa said: “who denies that Allah is in the heaven has disbelieved”.

Translation- I heard Ayyub as-sakhtayani said about Muatazillah: The thing on which they revolve is that they say that there is no one over the heavens.
Imam Dhahabi-

This statement is from the sayings of tabieen, and the first one to refuse that Allah Ta’ala is above the throne was Ja’d bin dirham and he denied every attribute of Allah Ta’ala, hearing, seeing, speech, hand, face and so forth. Khalid bin Abd-Allah Al-Qasri killed him, this is a famous story. And took this concept Al-Jahm bin safwan Imam of jahmiyya and accepted them and spread it. And raised objection with it, first he said that Allah Ta’ala Istawala Al-Arsh (rose over the throne) is by meaning Istawla (took power of the throne). And it was the end of the era of tabieen, rejected this concept Imams of the era like Al-Awzai, Abi haneefa, Maalik, Al-Laith bin sa’ad, Al-thauri, Himad bin zaid, hamid bin salmah, Ibn Al Mubarak and after them from Imams on the guidance.

And whoever describes a thing from that (attributes) goes out from what Prophet (s.a.w) was on. And he detaches himself from the Jamah of those who don’t describe and don’t interpret but believe with what is in the book (Quran) and sunnah and then keep silent. d)Some objections by Sufis(Barelwis) that Allah is every where.

Some Sufis(Barelwis) usually Quotes the following Verses .

a)Allah says,”And He is with you wheresover you are.”(Al-Quran 57:4)
b)Allah says, “There is no secret discourse(najwa) of three people except that he is the fourth..WITH them.. (Al-Quran 58:7)
c)Allah says,”And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein”(Surah Qaf 50:16)
d)Allah says,And He is Allah , [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn.(Surah Al-Anaam 6:3)

Explanation of 57:4 (Tafsir Ibn Kathir):
meaning, He is watching over you and witnessing your deeds wherever you may be, on land or at sea, during the night or the day, at home or in open areas or deserts. All of that is the same before His knowledge and all of it is under His sight and hearing. He hears your speech and sees where you are. He knows your secrets and your public statements,

Explanation of 58:7(Tafsir Ibn Kathir):
meaning, He is watching them, perfectly hearing their speech, whether uttered in public or secret. His angels record all that they say, even though He has better knowledge of it and hears them perfectly, as Allah said Know they not that Allah knows their secret ideas, and their Najwa, and that Allah is the All-Knower of the unseen.) (9:78),(Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private Najwa And Our messengers are by them to record.) (43:80) For this reason, there is a consensus among the scholars that this “with” in 58:7 refers to Allah’s knowledge. There is no doubt that this meaning is true, especially if we add to it the certainty that His hearing encompasses all things, as well as His sight. He, the Exalted and Most Honored, is never lacking in knowing all their affairs.
Note:-Online Tafsir can be had from http://www.qtafsir.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1626&Itemid=114

Explanation of 50:16(Tafsir Ibn Kathir):
The statement of Allah the Exalted,
(And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.) means, His angels are nearer to man than his jugular vein. Those who explained `We’ in the Ayah to mean `Our knowledge,’ have done so to avoid falling into the idea of incarnation or indwelling; but these two creeds are false according to the consensus of Muslims. Allah is praised and glorified, He is far hallowed beyond what they ascribe to Him. The words of this Ayah do not need this explanation (that `We’ refers to `Allah’s knowledge’), for Allah did not say, `and I am closer to him than his jugular vein.’ Rather, He said,
(And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein. ) just as He said in the case of dying persons,
(But We are nearer to him than you, but you see not.) (56:85), in reference to His angels (who take the souls). Allah the Exalted the Blessed said,
(Verily, We, it is We Who have sent down the Dhikr and surely, We will guard it.) (15:9) Therefore, the angels brought down the revelation, the Qur’an, by the leave of Allah, the Exalted, the Most Honored. Thus, the angels are closer to man than his own jugular vein, by the power and leave of Allah.

Explanation of 6:3(Tafsir Ibn Kathir):
(And He is Allah in the heavens and the earth, He knows what you conceal and what you reveal, and He knows what you earn.) Meaning, it is He Who is called Allah, throughout the heavens and the earth, that is, it is He who is worshipped, singled out, whose divinity is believed in by the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth. They call Him Allah, and they supplicate to Him in fear and hope, except those who disbelieve among the Jinns and mankind. In another Ayah, Allah said;
(It is He Who is God in the heavens and the earth.)﴿43:84﴾ meaning, He is the God of those in heaven and those on earth, and He knows all affairs, public and secret.
(And He knows what you earn) all the good and bad deeds that you perform.

His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allaah has power over all things, and that Allaah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge.[Surah al-Talaaq 65:12] Comments:-It’s proven from above Ayat Allah has comprehended everything in his knowledge….Let’s analyse the Opinions of Salaf.

Translation- Narrated Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (May Allah have mercy on him) in the book “Ar Radd Ala Al Jahamiyyah”, which was compiled and transmitted by his son Abdullah, in the chapter “Refuting the jahamiyyahs on the denial of Allah being above his throne”Pg 92-93:
I asked them “You deny that Allah is above his throne then why did HE say {The merciful rose over the throne (Surah Taha,Verse 5)}? They said: ” HE is below the seventh earth just like HE is above the throne and HE is in the heavens and THE earth”.
I replied: “Muslims know of many places being where is against the greatness of Allah, Like your bodies and your bellies and toilet and brothels, being in such places is against the great stature of Allah. And the almighty has informed us through these verses that HE is in the heaven, {Do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway? Or do you feel secure that He who [holds authority] in the heaven would not send against you a storm of stones? (Surah Mulk, verse 17-17)}, {To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it. (Surah Fatir, verse 10)}, {indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself (Surah Aal e Imran, verse 55)}, {Allah raised him to Himself (Surah An Nina, verse 158)},{They fear their Lord above them (Surah An-Nahl, verse 50)}. The glorified has informed us that HE is in the heaven”.

Abdullah ibn Al-Mubarak (181 AH)
Translation- Shaikh Bukhari said: I asked Abd-Allah ibn Mubarak, how we know our lord? He said: “In the seventh heaven over his throne”.
And he spoke “Over the seventh heaven over his throne, and we don’t say like jahmiyyah say that he is here on earth” (Reference 1) .
When it was said to Ahmad bin Hanbal he said: “this is what we believe” (Reference 2) .
Imam Dhahabi-

This is sahih and proven about Ibn Al Mubarak and Ahmad (r.a both). And his saying “in the heaven” in the last narration prove to you that that he meant from his saying “in the heaven” is “over the heaven”, like in the other sahih narration he wrote to Yahya ibn Mansoor al-Faqih

Allah says,”Nay! When the earth is pounded by power, AND THY LORD COMETH, and His angels, rank upon rank, and Hell, that Day, is brought face to face – On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? (Al-Quran 89:21-23)
Comments:-If Allah is present everywhere then why he will come on the day of Resurrection with Angels?

Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.(Surah Baqarah Ayat-255)

Conclusion :- The above verses of Quran and Ahadith of Prophet(sallal lahu alihi wasalam) and Consensus from Sahabas and Tabein clearly says Allah is not present physically everywhere by his dhaat (self) but is present separate from His creation, above the heaven and above his Arsh (Throne).
