The meaning of the hadith regarding wife licking ulcer

Some of the Christian Missionaries quotes the following hadiths to show that women are like slaves in Islam and only husbands have rights over the wife.

Hadeeth no. 1

It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allaah, this daughter of mine refuses to get married. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to her: “Obey your father.” She said: By the One Who sent you with the truth, I will not get married until you tell me what the husband’s rights over his wife are. He said: “The husband’s rights over his wife are such that if he had an ulcer and she licked it, she would not have fulfilled his rights.” She replied By the one who sent you with truth, I will never marry now. He peace be upon him said. Do not marry them (the girls) without their consent. [Targheeb wat-Tarheeb 3/35, Ibn Hibban 4163, Mustadrak al Haakim hadith no: 2821]

Response:

1. Chain of narrators:

Some of the scholars said its chain is authentic while others said it is Munkar and weak.

Those who authenticated the chain are Imam al Haakim, But

a) Imam ad-Dahabee followed alHaakim and said
Rather it is Munkar, Abu Hatim said: Rabi bin Uthman who is in the chain is Munkir al Hadeeth [Mukhtasar Istedraak al Hafidh ad-Dahabi ala Mustadrak Abi Abdullah al Haakim by Ibn Malaqqan no. 240]

b) Imam al Bazzar said:
I don`t know anyone who narrated these words with the exception of this chain and no one narrates from Rabee with the exception of Jafar [Kashf al astaar no:1465]

c) Shaykh Saalih al Munajjid weakened after detailed discussion on the chains and said:
i,e. these narrations are weak and not proven. [Islamqa fatwa no: 151353]

d) Shaykh Abdullah Jadee said:

2. Text of the hadith

a) Shaykh Abdullah Jadee said

Then he quoted the hadith and said:

The way this hadeeth describes the rights of the husband over his wife in such repulsive language is alien and odd compared to the commonly used language in the Sunnah of the Prophet , who used to keenly choose the most thoughtful and gentle words and who was granted wisdom, eloquence, and the ability to produce words that are concise but comprehensive in meaning. Allaah, The Exalted, has underlined the rights of the husband over his wife in the Quran and the Sunnah of His Messenger , who was endowed with the refined and noble character, in the most refined and comprehensive statements. For instance, Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means): {And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable.} [Quran 2:228].” (and then he talked about chain of narrators)[Tahreer Aloom al hadeeth 2/757, Translation taken from Islamweb]

b) Another rout of this hadeeth from Abu Huraira ra states, after listening to the hadith, the girl said:
that she said if these are the rights of husband than i will not marry in this world.

This makes it more problematic and this chain is weakened by Mundari as he said
Sulaiman bin Dawood al Yamami is severely weak.[Targheeb wal Tarheeb]

c) When A Man said to Prophet peace be upon him:
“I shall abstain from women and shall never marry”.

Prophet peace be upon him replied:
“Are you the people who said such and such things? By Allah, I fear Allah more than you do, and I am most obedient and dutiful among you to Him, but still I observe fast and break it; perform Salat and sleep at night and take wives. So whoever turns away from my Sunnah does not belong to me”. agreed upon [Riyaadh as-Saliheen Hadith 143]

d) If the hadith in discussion is authentic then it should not be taken literally, It just means Husband rights over his wife are great, as Allah says

And they (women) have rights (over their husbands as regards living expenses) similar (to those of their husbands) over them (as regards obedience and respect) to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. [Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #228]

This hadith comes under the chapter of the verse, where Allah says:

(Say: If the Most Gracious (Allah) had a son, then I am the first of the worshippers.) [43:81]

Ibn Kathir commented:
meaning, `if this were so, then I would worship Him on that basis, because I am one of His servants; I obey all that He commands me and I am not too arrogant or proud to worship Him.’ This conditional phrase does not mean that what is described could happen nor that is possible. (end quote)

And the hadith where Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“If there was to have a Prophet after me, it would have been ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab.” [ Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 49, Chapters on Virtues, Hadith 4050]

Now this does not mean Umar bin al Khattab ra was a Prophet neither it means Umar bin al Khattab ra was better than Abu Bakr. These type of ahadith can not be taken literally.

Hadeeth no: 2
It is narrated from Anas that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “It is not acceptable for any human to prostrate to another, but if it were acceptable for any human to prostrate to another, I would have ordered women to prostrate to their husbands, because of the greatness of the rights they have over them. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if there were sores from his feet to the top of his head flowing with pus, then she licked them, she would not have given him all his rights.” MUSNAD AHMAD (HADITH 12375)

Response:

a) Shaykh Shoaib al Aranoot said:

Saheeh Lighairihi with the exception of the wrods (i.e. these words are not saheeh, which are) “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if there were sores from his feet to the top of his head…” These words are only narrated by Husayn al Marawwazi from Khalaf bin Khaleefa and Khalaf became forgetful before his death… al Bazzar (2454) and Abu Nuyeem in Dalaail (287) mentioned with the rout of Muhammad bin Muawiyah bin Maalij al Baghdadi from Khalaf bin Khaleefah without the saying “”By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if there were sores from his feet to the top…” regarding Muhammad bin Muawiyah, an-Nisaee and Musallama bin al Qasim said “there is no harm in him” Abu Bakkar al Bazzar said “Trustworthy”, another witness of this hadeeth is the narration of Muhammad bin Muawiyah and another witness is the hadeeth of Ibn Abbas ra which is in at-Tabrani in his al Kabeer (12003) The chain is strong. And The hadeeth of Abu huraira ra which is short without this story of الجمل.. Another witness is the hadeeth of Abdullah bin abi awfi which comes in Musnad 4/381 and the chain is Hasan and authenticated by Ibn Hibban 4171 [Taleeq Shuaib al Aranoot al Musnad 3/158]

b) Shaykh Saalih al Munajjid said in Islamqa Fatwa no.151353:

Note: Shaykh Saalih al Munajjid quoted this hadeeth in Islamqa fatwa no: 4601 but he did not talked about chain of narrators.
